Frequently asked questions
What does cultural and linguistic diversity mean in aged care?
CALD refers to recognising and respecting the languages, traditions and customs of people from non-English-speaking and multicultural backgrounds. In practice this means using interpreters when needed and adapting care plans to each person’s cultural preferences — from dietary requirements to communication styles and religious observances.
Does GHCA provide interpreter services for CALD clients?
Yes. GHCA is registered with TIS National (Translating and Interpreting Service) and arranges professional interpreters or bilingual support workers for assessments, care planning meetings and ongoing support. Free TIS interpreting is available 24/7 on 131 450, and our internal staffing team can also pair clients with support workers who speak their preferred language.
How does cultural and linguistic diversity improve health outcomes?
Research consistently shows that culturally and linguistically appropriate care improves trust, communication and engagement with treatment plans. When CALD clients receive care in their preferred language and within their cultural framework, they are more likely to attend appointments, follow recommendations and report higher satisfaction — leading directly to better physical and mental health outcomes.
Which GHCA services are available for CALD communities?
All GHCA services are delivered with cultural sensitivity, including aged care, the Support at Home program, NDIS disability services, allied health and child and youth services. To discuss culturally tailored support for yourself or a loved one, contact GHCA on 1300 157 715 or submit a referral form.
